Clean It Up

A delightful little stop-motion video from Goons promoting a cleaner world. I can dig it.

UPSO: Fuel TV

“I wanted to show the excitement I get out of things like riding bikes with friends,” says UPSO. “When life gets too crazy or stressful, it's things like friends and fun that get me out of my funk. It doesn't matter if it's paintbrushes or snowboarding, it's all about expressing yourself. I've always been amazed by the support action sports gives art, from skateboards to t-shirt designs and shoes, it all comes full circle.”

Steve Aoki: Forever (Remix feat. Kanye, Lil Wayne, Eminem)

If your like me than you've never found Drake particularly palatable but Steve Aoki fixes all that by serving up another piping hot rap remix for your ears to feast on. Do you like how far I took the food metaphor? Yeah, I got them word skills.

Enemy Of The State: A Love Story

Lupe's newest and incredibly sick mixtape. I feel guilty for not posting this as soon as it came out but I started listening to it on repeat and wasn't able to stop for quite a while. But now I did so i can tell how badly you need to hear this: very.

Quotable: "Rest in peace to Patrick. Rest in peace to stacks kid. Rest in peace to rap? no. Rest in peace to wackness. Yeah nigga I whacked it. Baby boy with the glasses. He is like a black rap Zach Galifianakis. Hangover, game over, n***a that’s it!

Dirty Money: Angels (Remix feat. Lupe Fiasco)

Didddy unveils the Lupe Fiasco remix of Dirty Money's Angels. I can't say I dig the auto-tune chorus but everything Lupe says is sick as usual. This is a good little preview of what might be on his upcoming mixtape, Enemy of the State: A Love Story which slated to drop tomorrow but probably will get delayed.

Black Thought: The Professional

Black Thought, the front man for the legendary Roots, drops some true science on this newly released track. It doesn't have a hook at all it's just straight lyricism all the way and i'm loving it.

Blakroc: Ain't Nothing Like You feat. Mos Def & Jim Jones

Here it is Dame Dash's latest musical venture, Blakroc. It teams up The Black Keys with emcees such as Q-Tip, Ludacris, Raekwon, RZA, Pharoahe Monch & the late ODB to name a few. With the release of the video to their first single “Ain’t Nothing Like You (Hoochie Coo) featuring the talents of Mos Def and Jim Jones it becomes more than obvious that this blend of rock and rap will cause some major ruckus within the industry. Blakroc is expected to release their debut album on November 27th.

BET: Eminem, Black Thought, & Mos Def 2009 Cypher

The highlight of the 2009 BET Awards, at least for me, was without a doubt the 3 minute cypher featuring Black Thought, Mos Def, and Eminem. With DJ Premier on the wheels of steel these three emcees take turns dropping the best freestyle verses I've heard since the Slaughterhouse Greenlantern OnDaSpot cypher.

Basement Jaxx: My Turn

The crazy cool video for the My Turn by Basement Jaxx. I really like this video, it has some very sublime effects in it. The song is ok too I guess.

TeeFury

I just recently stumbled upon this site and thought it was really cool. It's called TeeFury and what they do is make cool t-shirts, nothing special right? what sets this site away from other "clever" tee sites is that every t-shirt they make is only available for 24 hours exactly and then it's gone forever ehich I think is a cool way to do bussiness. Anyway, check them out and see what you think.

Slaughterhouse: The One

This isn't that new (came out this summer) but a lot of people still haven't heard of Slaughterhouse despite their star power. Slaughterhouse consists of Royce Da 5'9", Crooked I, Joell Ortiz, and Joe Budden. Now I'm usually a big advocate of illegal downloads, but this group is dope and they deserve to be famous so cop the album. Also if this is the first you've heard of Crooked I you should go download one of his mixtapes this minute.

Volkswagon: Urban Piano

Saw this over on Wooster Collective, it's a cool little project put together by VW where they turned a staircase in a Stockholm train station into a working piano.

Asbestos: Lost Posters

This is so lame. I've been doing this around the DMV for like a year only I use paper and aerosol glue instead of stickers. Some of the stickers he put up are literally identical to the ones I put up too. It's cool though it gave me an idea for a new poster, "LOST: Creativity"

Lupe Fiasco: Fire

Lupe drops another gem for the masses. The song, Fire, samples Jimi Hendrix's '69 classic of the same name. I'm really digging the uptempo and Lupe's lyrics are insanely good as usual. There's a rumor going around that this song was a response to the total snub Lu got from MTV's Hottest MC's list but that doesn't make much sense to me. I'm hoping this is off his new album.

Building Projections

This is a video of some stunningly beautiful projections done on public buildings, cars, and other objects (pretty much anything that isn't a projection screen)

Bliss FM: Gotta Spend

Here's a new song from the very dope DMV based group Bliss FM. ATOM gives us a banging beat as usual and John's rhymes are on point, I'd expect nothing less from these cats. You can hear and download the song after the jump.

The Roots: How I Got Over

This is the official video for The Roots new song How I Got Over to be featured on their upcoming eighth studio album of the same name. The legendary Hip Hop band from Illadelph's live instrumentation and Black Thought's lyrics are as sharp as ever. This is very comforting as I was worried that Jimmy Fallon's mediocrity would rub off on them during their time as his house band.

Blu x David Ellis: COMBO

Blu (the street artist not the rapper) and painter/filmaker David Ellis have joineed forces to give the world the gift of COMBO. While very similar to MUTO by Blu COMBO includes elements not only of graffiti and animation but sculpture as well. If you haven't seen MUTO though you should check it out because in my opinion its even cooler than this.

What The Fuck?!

This is wrong. No one should ever go to jail for creating art. Granted this kid didn't make very good art and all he did was tag but if he can get EIGHT YEARS in prison alongside rapists and murderers just think what they would do to a real artist for putting up a mural. Eight years! Think about that for a second, I've seen people on the news getting 2 years for sexual assault and it's considered a fair punishment. I think it's time we as citizens reevaluate the reason we have the laws we have. If it was to prevent damage to personal property this kid would get a year and have to pay for damages. I think perhaps creative expression is what they are trying to punish here. I say paint subway cars and if your piece is gone the next day go back and break the train windows, then they can decide if they'd rather have art or vandalism.

Bang-Yao Liu: DEADLINE

This video is so incredibly sick that it's incredibly sick that something this incredibly sick could be made in the first place. Did that make any sense? I hope so. Here's what the artist had to say about the video:
.
"This is my senior project at Savannah College of Art and Design. Where my idea comes from is that every time when I am busy, I feel that I am not fighting with my works, I am fighting with those post-it notes and deadline. I manipulated the post-it notes to do pixel-like stop motion and there are some interactions between real actor and post-its."... Bang-Yao Liu

Lupe Fiasco: Street Stories

Here's a brand new song from Lupe Fiasco via DJ Drama & DJ MoonDawg’s newest mixtape. The song is very reminiscent of his early mixtapes and to be honest his flow seriously sounds like Biggie at more than a couple points. It can be hard to hear because their voices are so different but imagine Biggie spitting the same thing and you'll see what I mean.

Ji Lee: 3D Chess Board

This chess board by Ji Lee doesn't actually change the game in any way, but it looks cool as hell.

Asher Roth: Be By Myself feat. Cee-Lo (Video)

After a week or 2 on the top of the charts Asher Roth's new album, Asleep In The Bread Aisle, has fallen out of the top ten. I'm guessing that's the reason he dropped this video, to see if he could boost sales right quick. Well regardless of the motives, this video is for a good song and features plenty of scantily clad women so I'm not complaining.

Raekwon: New Wu feat. Ghostface Killah & Method Man

All too often I find myself thinking, "I miss Wu-Tang" but come August 11th I won't have to think that anymore (or at least not until I've listened to every song a million times and start fiendin' again) This is the video for New Wu (formerly titled Wu Ooh) off OB4CL2 it features Ghostface and Method Man with production by the Alchemist. The album drops August 11th.

Keiichi Tanaami & Pete Fowler: Super Furry Animals Cover Art

Back in the day, when musicians pressed up vinyl, artists could put incredible detail into their album art because the record cases were so large. But as the medium of distribution became smaller(CD's & tapes) detail was lost. Nowadays all we have are mp3's with tiny thumbnails for covers and you can barely make out a Jimi Hendrix album's artwork. The point is, I'm glad to see a band putting trippy detail into their cover art once more.

Skyzoo: Freshfest feat. Wale

Now that I think about it I should have made Skyzoo a choice in the poll for best up-and-coming emcee but what can you do. Skyzoo is drawing a lot of comparisons to Jay-Z these days, I'm not sure if I agree but he is dope. Couple that with Wale and you got a damn good song.

Iri5: Ghosts In The Machine

The Notorious B.I.G. once said "I let my tape rock 'til my tape pop" and that's exactly what Iri5's new project is all about. For "Ghosts in the Machine" Iri5 took the tape from popped cassettes and used it to create portraits of famous and iconic musicians. Jimi Hendrix is pictured above, but if you didn't know that do me a favor and slap yourself.

Light Paint

For those who don't know light painting is the art of changing the exposure and shutter speed on a camera to allow the artist to then "paint" on the photo by lighting some objects or parts of the photo longer and/or brighter than others. It's pretty tight, and if you're a fan of it this is the site for you.

Above: AIG Easter Egg Hunt

I just thought these looked tight, I guess the political message is cool too. The detail on these stencils is ridiculous.

Del Tha Funkee Homosapien: Dark Streets, A Lifetime Of Funkiness

Del definitely deserves the title 'Tha Funkee Homosapien' more than anyone else and I'm glad that someone finally put together a compilation like this. Dark Streets, A Lifetime Of Funkiness isn't a 'best of' cd or anything its more of a sampler of Del's work through the years. If your already a fan of Del you might have some of these songs already but if you've never listened to the Deltron before this is a good taste.

Rhymefest: The Manual (Free Download)

Bliss FM: Burn After Hearing

Bliss FM dropped their new song, Burn After Hearing, today and it's more than a little sick. If you haven't heard their mixtape, The Food, yet you're missing out. Those of you who have heard it though will be familiar with ATOM's dope beats and John Carmichael's ability to drop metaphors that the average joe and hip hop head alike can appreciate without having to water down his lyrics. Not to mention they both hail from the DMV which is always a plus in my book. Enjoy.

Nat King Cole: Re Generations

I just got to sit down and listen to the new Nat King Cole album, Re Generations, all the way through for the first time today(until now I've basically been listening to the singles.) The album, as you may or may not already know, features classic and unreleased Nat King Cole songs remixed by artists like Nas, Just Blaze, Damian Marley, and Cut Chemist to name a few. On the whole, the album was good but not great, which isn't to say there aren't great songs on it(there definitely are) but a lot of the tracks feel like they're leaning on Nat to make them good. The Civil Grade: 7/10 (worth the download, but you might end up deleting a couple tracks)

I am really digging Hit That Jive Jack feat. Izza Kizza though. I just love the whole swinging vibe. Check it out:

Ricky Jay Card Routine

This is my apology to the magic community for posting that abominable graffiti magic video(see my apology to the graffiti community below.) This is Ricky Jay doing some routine that looks like it could make you a lot of money in poker. Ricky Jay is generally considered the best card manipulator alive but most people recognize him from the episode of Mythbusters where they see if you can pierce human flesh by throwing a playing card at it, he was the guy throwing the playing cards. That was actually pretty tight, he threw a playing card through a newspaper from like 15 feet away and it went threw the paper and made a slit, then he threw another card through the same slit.

Reverse Graffiti

Here's the video that eventually led me to the graffiti magic video. I figured I should post a dope graffiti video as a sort of apology to the graffiti community for the previous video.

Florian Zimmerman: Graffiti Magic

Listen I really like both graffiti and magic, but someone needs to tell Florian Zimmerman that they don't mix. Those related videos on youtube will take you to some strange places. I somehow got to this from watching a reverse graffiti video on youtube and thought graffiti+magic would actually equal something cool, how wrong I was. It's kinda funny though in a "Who would ever pay to see this guy?" sorta way and he's also performing for a bunch of confused looking rich people some of whom appear to not know what graffiti or magic is. Plus, every trick he did sucked, except for the bike thing at the end, but other than that it was all terrible. Oh, and the music selection was terrible, he was clearly trying to chose something that everyone would like but he ended up with something no one would like(at least no one I know, though I'm sure that song is famous for a reason, I'm just not sure what it is.) Somebody needs to watch this and leave a comment so I can know I'm not crazy for thinking this guy is fucking shit, no worse than that, fucking shit...literally. Actually that might be better to watch, at least there's shock value, but I guess if it had the same music to it it'd be just as bad.

WiiSpray

Nothing is ever going to replace real graffiti as a culture or an art form, fortunately WiiSpray isn't trying to replace graffiti culture or art it's trying to add to both. Information about WiiSpray is scant but what I can tell you is that it will allow players to use their wiimotes as spray paint cans and create art. It will allow users to also collaborate regardless of being separated by time and/or space as well as save work to a server for everyone to view. The only other thing I know about it is that I want it to be out already. For more info and pictures visit their website.

MST3K: Manos And The Hands Of Fate

In the spirit of April Fools Day I give you MST3K: Manos: The Hands of Fate. Manos is quite possibly the worst movie ever made(it was made on a bet) and it's actually funny in its own right but it gets even funnier when Joel and his robot friends ridicule it. Also there is a short Chevorlet training film before the movie that is almost as bad. Quick side note: manos means hands in spanish so the title translates to Hands: The Hands of Fate

If you're not familiar with Mystery Science Theater 3000(a.k.a. MST3K) you should be, so let me explain(or read the wikipedia article on it). The plot is this; a janitor at some company does a good job cleaning up everything, but his bosses don't like him so they shoot him into space. Once in space they send him crappy movies(I'm talking really crappy movies, not Daredevil crappy, I mean Santa Claus Conquers the Martians crappy) and force him to watch them. The janitor, named Joel, has only one defense, a sense of humor, so he makes fun of the movies. Also he can't control when the movies start because he used those parts to build robot friends who also make fun of the movies. The last episode aired in 1999 so some of the pop culture references are old but they're still just as funny.

Reebok AF1 Technologyf

Some cool technology by Reebok for soccer fans out there. Then again A and F are conveniently the first letters of April Fools. I'm a fan of both cool technology and practical jokes though so, whether this is turns out to be a real or not, I'll be happy either way.

It's The Real: TMZ You In Hell

Considering that it's April 1st, I thought I'd throw some funny your way. More coming in a minute, but in the meantime enjoy this video from the folks at itsthereal.com and featuring Nick Cannon

How To Stick It To The Man Pt. 1

Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to The Civil Underground's first segment of our new instructional course on sticking it to the man. Part One: How to pay a traffic ticket. A Washington man by the name of Michael Harold Lynch was recently charged $206 for a traffic violation, which isn't very remarkable, but Lynch did something I wish I had thought of the last time I had to pay a ticket; he filled a plastic bag with $206 in change, urinated in it, and sent it in. The best part is, he didn't do anything illegal. According to postal officials, it is acceptable to mail bodily fluids as long as they are properly contained and don't leak or smell. I strongly urge everyone to pay all fines this way from now on.

Method Man: G-Unit Radio Freestyle

In this video we see the M-E-T-H-O-D Man busting a sick freestyle. Normally I wouldn't post anything that contains the words G-unit but seeing how this is Method Man I figured I could make an exception.

Prince: Chocolate Box feat. Q-tip

The artist formerly known as O(+> and Q-tip team up in this video for the song Chocolate Box. It's good to see talented musicians teaming up like this to make great music.

N.A.S.A.: Gifted feat. Kanye West, Santigold & Lykke Li

This is my favorite video so far for any of the songs off of N.A.S.A.'s album, The Spirit Of Apollo. N.A.S.A. also plans to release a full-length documentary film which will include interviews with many of the artists who contributed to The Spirit of Apollo and behind the scenes footage of studio sessions.

Smirnoff x Nice & Smooth x Pac Div: Funky For You '09

This may be just part of a Smirnoff campaign trying to get consumers to think of their vodka as "hip," but as long as they keep the songs coming I'll humor them and say that it is. This song features Nice & Smooth and Pac Div, who are quickly becoming one of my favorite groups. Check out the song below.

Adidas Urban Art Guide

This is really only interesting to people with iPhones though it may make some people go out and buy one. Adidas recently launched a new app called the Urban Art Guide which can lead you to graffiti in cities all over the globe. The app allows users to log locations where they spot street art, upload pictures of the piece, and then uses the iPhone's GPS function to lead others who have the Urban Art Guide straight to the art. Then, once they get there, users can rate the art which helps others decide which pieces they want to see. The best though is that its free.

Saint Pauli: I Need Rhythm

Here's the music video for I Need Rhythm by Saint Pauli.

Wale x Bun B x Señor Kaos x Young Chris: Searching For An Outlet

Pretty dope new song from Wale, Bun B, Young Chris, and Señor Kaos. I like, but the problem with songs like this where a bunch of emcees rap together is that there is always a weak link. That's just my opinion though and I have some pretty high standards, judge for yourself.

Lupe Album Update

Many of you heard the news about the indefinite postponement of the final album in Lupe's trilogy, LupE.N.D., but now it appears that the album is being called off all together. Lupe announced his plans via his new twitter page and, in addition to canceling LupE.N.D., also announced that his new project, originally named The Great American Rap Album, will be titled We Are Lasers. Here's what Lupe had to say about the new title:

"[The name] Comes from some repressed high school outcast shit…blended amidst And He Gets The Girl ambitions. I’ve been working for about a week and around 60% done."

Lupe has plans to release two albums this year including We Are Lasers and as much as I was looking forward LupE.N.D. I'm relieved that Lupe won't be retiring just yet (official word is that he will still retire, just not quite so soon.)

Asher Roth: Just Listen (Acapella)

I have to admit, I doubted Asher Roth's skills as a lyricist. I thought he was overrated, but he's proven me wrong, which is good news for everyone because that means he dropped an ill track. In this video, Asher Roth drops science while rapping acapella.

Tona: Major feat. Tenisha

Here's a very dope video, for the very dope song Major by Tona featuring Tenisha.

Samsung x Sheep

I don't know much about sheep but it seems to me like this wouldn't be easy to do. All I can say about this is that I now firmly support the addition of sheep herding to the X Games...or at least the Olympics...maybe ESPN Ocho will pick up coverage.

Mos Def: The Ecstatic Preview

Mos Def - Words - The Ecstatic - in stores Spring 2009

Mos Def hasn't dropped an cd in a while but that will just make his upcoming album, The Ecstatic, all the more enjoyable. This video is a promotional trailer for the album and personally reminded me his freestyle in the park from Freestyle The Art of Rhyme. If all the songs on The Ecstatic are this good then I'm pretty sure that the Mighty Mos Def has a classic on his hands.

Nickelus F: Bubble Lip

VA's own Nickelus F has let loose yet another track in anticipation of his upcoming album, Heathen. I really liked this song because, aside from his usual metaphors and punchlines, about half way through the song Nickelus F brings out a very sick flow. It's not the best flow I've ever heard, but I just really really like it for some reason.

Pharrel Williams Buys Textile Company

Hip Hop producer and clothing designer Pharrel Williams (a VA native) recently added to his entrepreneurial résumé by becoming co-owner of the textile company Bionic Yarn, which manufactures cloth from recycled plastic bottles. Here's what Pharrel had to say:
.
“I have to think about the future of this planet,” said Williams in an e-mail interview, adding that he plans to use the fabric in his own clothing lines, although there are not yet any designs in the works. “I love quality,” he said, “And quality with environmental benefits is the cherry on top.”

Consequence: Buggin' Out '09 Feat. Kid Cudi

10 years after its release Consequence and Kid Cudi remake the classic song by A Tribe Called Quest with a new set of lyrics and the same bumping vibe. The video was directed by Rick Cordero.
