You haven't heard of DJ Benzi you say? That's doesn't matter because you have heard of Blu, Twista, U-N-I, The Cool Kids, Kid Cudi, Charles Hamilton, Pharrel, and Pac Div. This is essentially a collection of some of DJ Benzi's favorite emcees this year. Check the sample track below by Che-Grand and Colin Munroe.
Dope Couture recently released a mixtape in collaboration with DJ Benzi titled Jetsetters. To commemorate the occasion they also decided to drop some fresh tee-shirts.
Nickel Eye got it right with this one. Teaming up with the hottest up-and-coming emcee in the game was definitely a good move. If you're not a Nikel Eye (Nikolai Fraiture) fan then you'll still enjoy Wale's verse so go ahead and have a listen.
Atlanta emcee Señor Kaos drops this video to celebrate Women's History Month. The song is produced by Illastrate. The video is directed by Jeaniusmedia
I'm not going to tell you the full story of Pacific Division, you can read about that on their website, but I will tell you they haven't been an overnight success. Pacific Division has put in the work, and you can hear it in their music. This newly dropped self-titled track is no exception. Pac Div will also be on the groups Church League Champions Mixtape.
Quotable: "See, back in high school we had the flyest class pictures/See, back in high school you were some bitin' ass niggas/I was cool with the thugs I was cool with the bitches/You ran from some thugs, you was cool with some bitches"
Talib Kweli and company have released this new track featuring an electronica-inspired beat and catchy melody. This song has "dance" written all over it, perfect for the weekend. Download it here
This is the video for 3 Drink Minimum off of TiRon's Ketchup mixtape. It's a good song and the video is pretty funny too. It basically follows around TiRon and depicts what it's like to have a few too many drinks.
This is the first public view of the Fretless Fader system, designed for use with the Controller One. With this you can cut and change notes through 2 octaves without taking your hands away from the vinyl and fader.
This stuff isn't possible. There's just no way the human body can bend that way while moving while supporting that weight. Watch this video, and I guarantee you'll ask yourself, "How the [insert favorite obscenity] did he do that?!" multiple times.
Despite the unfortunate name this hoodie is fresh by most standards. The pullover features such "vintage" details as the rope tie opening and oval-shaped pockets. The hoodie costs about $225 and is available in orange, tan, and black.
Two of Hip Hop's brightest new talents team up for tribute to the ATCQ classic. Of course it could never match the original but hell it's close. Take a listen below. QuESt's full mixtape, Distant Travels Into Soul Theory, will be released March 2nd and word from those lucky enough to get advance copies is that it's going to be off the hook.
This video is damn sick. Basically it's this kid on a violin and this other kid on the wheels of steel just jamming. Seriously, take the time to watch this.
Another thursday, another remix from The Five One Band. I can't complain. Today's remix features N.E..R.D. and they're song Killjoy off of Seeing Sounds.
This Ohio emcee's current LP Death of a Man, Rebirth of a King features this jazzy track with Slum Village. I'm a personal fan of Pryslezz's laid back style but if you're unfamiliar with it then check out the free download below.
For those of you who don't know, KRS-One is actually an acronym. It stands for Knowledge Reigns Supreme Over Nearly Everyone. In my opinion that is the perfect name for the man so commonly referred to as The Teacha. In this video KRS shares with us some of the places he gets his knowledge. These books all sound incredibly good, now I just have to decide which one to start with.
The reason I had to post this despite my strict anti-auto-tune sentiments is because this video is absolutely hysterical. You see, when you're an Oscar winner for Best Actor you tend to make friends with other great actors and directors and celebrities like Ron Howard, Jake Gyllenhaal, Forest Whitaker, Cedric the Entertainer, and Samuel L. Jackson. And once you're friends with them you can ask them to be in a music video for a song you made about getting drunk. That's right, Ron Howard is in this music video. Why are you not watching this yet?
Hi-Tek and Talib Kweli have finally gotten around to making a sequel to the classic Train of Thought. What's even better though is that they brought funk legend Bootsy Collins along for at least the first song. No word yet on when the full album will be out but I'm just glad we finally got this little gem after eight years of waiting.
Honestly I think the only reason people got so pissed about the whole Michael Phelps with bong thing is because he was in effect proving all those anti-drug fanatics wrong about their arguments that "...if you smoke pot you will never amount to anything." Everyone was all up in arms saying that kids look up to him as a role model etc.... What, you don't want your kids to grow up to be like Michael Phelps? Granted, the reason he won so many medals probably wasn't because he smoked but it obviously didn't hurt him either. I don't know, maybe I should get off the mount, I just think its cruel and unusual to lock up cannabis users in the same jails as rapists and murderers. Think about it, how many people have ever died due to marijuana use? I'll tell you, zero. But it would be lying to say marijuana can't ruin your life, it can, but only if you get caught and sent to jail because of an unjust law.
What was I supposed to be writing about? Oh yeah, the shirt. You can buy it Here
Tomokazu Matsuyama, formerly Matzu MP, is one of my personal favorite artists. You may recognize his work from the Civil Underground banner. This is Matsuyama's first book collection and it contains 96 pages, with full-color pictures of Tomokazu's canvases, studio, and public installations. You can get it on Amazon for $16 or if you were planning to buy one of the new Upper Playground UPLB New Era caps you can get a copy of the book for free with any purchase from the Upper Playground online store.
Upper Playground releases a tongue-in-cheek version of how it thinks baseball teams should be marketed. The hat pictured above is for the New York Pickpockets. Here's what Upper Playground has to say about the hats: Spring Training starts tomorrow and if you’re not a true baseball fan, you can get in on the action with Upper Playground’s baseball league comprised of vicious characters including Outlaws, Stranglers and Brawlers to name a few. Playing on different pop culture legends and characteristics of twelve cities, the UPLB collection is a tongue-in-cheek version of how UP thinks baseball teams should be branded. The cities and teams represented are: Los Angeles Diablos, Seattle Hoods, Brooklyn Brawlers, Oakland Outlaws, San Francisco Panhandlers, Chicago Racketeers, New York Pickpockets, Cleveland Slingshots, Portland Vipers, Philadelphia Players, and Boston Stranglers. Morning Breath created all of the designs; the hats are made of wool and feature front and back embroidery. The black sheep of all the teams, the Miami Kilos, do not have a 59FIFTY hat because to some companies, cocaine is just not cool.
You can cop the hats and tees Here or For more pictures click Here
Following in the footsteps of west coast heavyweight The Game's 300 Bars and Runnin' Jay Rock drops 112 hard hitting measures of his own. Spitting over the instrumental to the classic song Can't C Me as a tribute to 2Pac Jay Rock demands respect with this track.
What could be better than a Kanye song made entirely with auto-tune? A Kanye song made entirely without auto-tune! What's even better? A whole mixtape. Yeah yeah, I know what you were thinking, "Kanye has completely lost it with this singing shit." And you were right. Fortunately, while the rest of us looked away in disgust someone had a flash of insight and decided to find all of those Kanye tracks that most people have never heard(and that don't feature auto-tune) and compile them all into one easy to download .rar file. I had no idea some of these songs even existed. Enjoy!

Here's a dope freestyle from Kid Cudi over the instrumental from Drop by Rich Boy and Polow Da Don. And damn does he have a flow going, I have to say, 2009 is shaping up to be a very good year for Hip Hop.
Nickelus F drops a sick freestyle over the beat for Preservation by Aesop Rock and Del the Funky Homosapien. It's all part of the revised Thank You mixtape which will feature some all new material and tracks leaked from Heathen. Look for it March 10th.
Quotable: "And to there's no limit it's/like pool the way I take English and put a spin on it"
I've been into this song ever since I posted it a while back so naturally I was excited to see the video, especially the part about "midgets in the sky." Unfortunately they don't show any midgets in the sky but I still enjoyed the video.
Another song off the upcoming album Born Into This by DOOM (formerly MF Doom). I like this song but DOOM has done better in the past but I'm guessing he doesn't want to give away his best songs as free downloads before the album even comes out. Still, this is definitely worth a listen and as with any track produced by Jay Dee the beat is fire.
"Arriving just in time for his Rock The Bells performance, Kweli puts together his set at the last minute, links up with Mos Def to run through a couple of Black Star songs, and re-tells the story of eating McDonalds the first time he and Mos met."
This might not be hip hop but it's still good music. More importantly though it's really funny and the drum machine/mixer guitars with speakers attached are genius.
Quotable: "Jen told me she'd never ever see me again/when I saw her again, she said it again"
Lets be honest with ourselves people, there really hasn't been a good mash-up album since The Grey Album by Danger Mouse. Sure Blue Eyes Meets Bed-Stuy was good but was it a classic the way The Grey Abum was? I might be wrong of course, maybe what I should say is there hasn't been a mash-up album as good as Jaydiohead since The Grey Album or to be more exact ever. Sound impossible? I might be exaggerating but all I can say is I've this on loop since i got it.
If you're an underground head than you no doubt are already in love with MF Doom's complicated rhyme schemes and superb flow. If you don't know who MF Doom is then stop reading right now and go look up Danger Doom and Madvillain. What are you doing? Didn't I say to look up Danger Doom? Anyway, Doom has a new album coming out called Born Into This to be released on March 24. According to Lex Records it will be Doom’s:
"definitive album… encapsulating but surpassing all of his previous work."
Quotable: "it's like a murder spree/get sniped verbally"
Inglewood emcee Damani was reppin' the old school when he came out with this song and it's paid off with his own shoe. Adidas has teamed up with Damani to create this version of the classic EQT B-ball model. To coincide with the release of the shoe Undr Crwn has also created a special addition Damani t-shirt which can be seen in the video above.
Quotable: "Undr Crwn tee with Damani on the front/there's a lot of little rappers but Damani's in the front"
The infamous Metal Face has a new album on the way. It's called Born Into This and if you aren't excited about it you should seriously consider having your head examined. Anyway, for a sneak peak at the album check out That's That, you can download it HERE.
Damn this beat is sick. I can see why S.O.U.L. Purpose wanted to get on it so bad. And when a sick beat meets a sick emcee you get one incredibly ill track. This song will probably end up on City Limits, and with good reason.
There's this great new book out that anyone interested in graffiti or street art should read. The New York Times did an article about it and I can't really say anything better they did so you should just read the article.
Coming straight out of Canada, K-Os drops the video from his up-and-coming album Yes! There's a lot of dope Canadian artists around these days but K-Os might be my favorite. I just really dig the flow and the rhyme schemes.
In December a video for this leaked onto the internet but it quickly got pulled. Kid Cudi apparently didn't like how it came out so he decided to make a new one, and here it is. It was directed by So Me who also co-directed the Good Life video for Kanye.
If you don't recognize the name I don't blame you, D. Julien isn't the most famous cat to come out of Brooklyn. He's got skills though, enough to have been featured as a Myspace "Artist of the Week." I saw this over at 2dopeboyz and I gotta say it's pretty dope. I especially like the part where he gives the shout out to bloggers.
You can listen to him Here or Download the mixtape Here
The Five One Band loves D.C., which is a good quality for a band to have. Plus they make great music, another good quality. This is the latest installment of The Five One's 5109: Remix Album. It samples the Vampire Weekend song “Kids Don’t Stand a Chance." Download it, bump it, peep the video, and keep reppin' the DMV.
Brand new colorway for dunk enthusiasts. I think these are incredibly sick but I can't find them in my size. So someone else should buy them and let me know so I can live vicariously through them. You can get them at select Nike retailers including LTD.
Fresh new fitted released by Frank 151 as a part of their FDL Team Series for Spring 2009. The color way should look familiar to St. Louis Natives and the little arrows under the bill are an excellent touch.
This is quite possibly the coolest thing ever. It's a glass pool table that plays just like a traditional felt table. Nottage has accomplished this through the use of some sort of resin on top of the glass that simulates felt. I'm not really clear on how it works but if you care enough to find out you can visit an Australian patent office, personally I just think this is awesome. This was actually the inventor's senior project in high school and after graduation he turned the concept into his own company. To see the table in action peep the video below.
The table costs 39,900 Australian Dollars. Nottage can also build custom tables if you would prefer to play glass snooker or glass billiards over glass pool.
In addition to creating a new Coke bottle design, Coca-Cola has also created this new commercial featuring music from Justice. The video was also directed by Ed Banger, the video director of "D.A.N.C.E.", and So Me, the creative director of "D.A.N.C.E."
Jay Rock originally had Lil Wayne on this with him but he's come back with a remix featuring some west coast heavyweight. Personally I like it more than the original.
There are thirty-five days left for T.I. before he gets locked up, we'll miss him. Too bad he couldn't send Justin in his place. T.I. will be in prison for more than a year.
You might not have heard of Spectacula before this mixtape but you probably heard of the producers; The Gorillaz, Madlib, DJ Premier, 9th Wonder, Pete Rock, and The Alchemist to name a few.
"This new project is in preparation for Spectacula’s up and coming new studio album “Every Second Counts” which due for release sometime this year. The Queens emcee will be releasing a mixtape every month until the summer in the lead up to his album, this mixtape being the first in his “Quality In Quantity” series. Also check for some new releases from Dub MD this year as he tags-up for a second time with Nametag for Volume 2 of the “Classic Cadence” collection, along with projects with an army of other artists in 2009, keep it locked!"
Here's your homework. Buy Troubador by K'naan on Feb. 24. In the meantime you can study with this song leaked off the album featuring Mos Def and Chali 2na from J5. Buy Mos Def's album too and you'll get extra credit.
I'm not sure I like it yet but I love Outasight so I thought I'd post it anyway. If you don't know Outasight and are wondering why I love his music so much check out the additional songs below:
Ok so get this, Kid Cudi, the up-and-coming Cleveland rapper was set to perform at the NBA All-Star Weekend when he got into an altercation with representatives from Reebok. No details yet but apparently Reebok, who, as I understand it, was sponsoring this particular part of the event wanted Kid Cudi to wear Reeboks while performing but Kid Cudi refused to take off his Jordans. The arguement escalated to the point where the cops were called and Cudi was eventually tasered. This has to be one of the best reasons to get tasered ever but as you and I know, "Kicks rule everything around me"
I'd like to know which Jordans he was wearing and which Rbk's they wanted him to put on though, I feel like that makes a difference.
10 years ago today one of the greatest rappers of all time died. Big L was shot and killed in Harlem on the night of February 15, 1999. Gerard Woodley, a childhood friend of Big L, was arrested in May for the crime but later released. It has been speculated that Big L was murdered to take revenge on his older brother who could not be reached because he was in jail.
Nothing is worse than when someone with obvious talent who is bound for success isn't able to realize their full potential. Jay-Z has said that Big L was set to sign with Roc-a-fella but died the week before. Jay-Z has also bit two lines and possibly more from Big L. One of the lines Big L used in a freestyle with Jay-Z, "So we could never be a couple hun/Fuck love all I got for hoes is hard dick and bubble gum", Jay-Z later used in A Million And One Questions saying, "Mack double one, nigga I'm troublesome/all I got for chicks hard dick and bubble gum"
Big L was the king of punch lines, had one of the sickest grittiest flows around, and was, without a doubt, a straight up G. Big L is missed everytime someone mentions Harlem, freestyle, or gangster rap. I hope he's chillin' in thugs mansion.
Here's the famous '98 Freestyle off The Big Picture Quotable: "Far from broke I got enough bread/And mad hoes, Ask Beavis I get nothing but head"

I don't know much about Jabee but I can tell you he makes good music, and in the event that all those flowers and chocolates fail, this mixtape might help you get that special someone's clothes off.
I was about to put up a post on this like six hours ago but then I thought to myself, "Nah, everyone already knows about this, there's so much hype around it." Flash forward to here and now I was just talking to a friend of mine and I asked him what he thought of Drake's new mixtape. You can imagine my surprise when he said, "Who?"
Anyway, here it is. I don't usually listen to this Contmporary R&B-ish Hip Hop stuff so I can't really say for sure if this is better than whatever else is out there, but I have a feeling it is because unlike all that other junk when I hear this I think, "Pump up the volume!" as opposed to "Where are my earplugs?"
Quotable: "A lot of y'all are still sounding like last year/the game need change and I'm the motherfuckin' cashier/nickels for my thoughts, dimes in my bed/quarters of the kush shave the lines in my head"
DC Comics and New Era have teamed up once again to create this set of monochrome fitted hats. I've always loved fitted hats but too many of them are covered in logos from baseball teams that I don't give a shit about. These, on the other hand, are truly fresh. All four are expected to drop soon at www.neweracap.com
Art battling is exactly what you think, and twice as cool as it sounds. Here's what the Secret Wars website has to say about it.
"If my memory serves me right – I had just watched Warriors and Fight Club and probably had a couple of beers inside me – I started thinking how could we up the ante at our exhibitions and make it more of a show for the people….A day or so later and a pad filled with ideas, Secret Wars was born. Obviously the title was inspired by the Marvel comic – where many characters were summoned to a planet in a duel to the death. The rest is history…"
Cormega has been around longer than you think, for example a shout out from Nas on Illmatic. And despite his connects with the likes of Mobb Deep and Capone-N-Noreaga Cormega has had trouble making a splash in the Hip Hop world, his last album, The Testament, didn't even make the Billboard 200. Its hard to figure out why when he shows such obvious skill in this freestyle.
Quotable: "Got niggas cryin' like Isiah on the Nick's bench"
